

GEWOBAG – Gewerkschaftliche Wohn- und Baugenossenschaft, a housing cooperative – considers the energy transition not as a single action, but as a long-term task for its entire property portfolio. Together with ewz, GEWOBAG is bringing the combined solution of photovoltaics, self-consumption and charging infrastructure to all suitable housing developments.
The first system covers around 5,800 square metres – more than three ice hockey fields – and supplies 375 apartments with locally produced solar power.
The ideal model needed to be economically viable with the lowest possible amount of work for GEWOBAG. Investment, operation, maintenance, billing and charging infrastructure were to be coordinated by a single source. At the same time, the solution should make it as easy as possible for residents to access solar power and electromobility.
GEWOBAG chose ewz because it brings together planning, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and billing. A central point of contact simplifies collaboration and creates planning security. After commissioning, ewz takes over the long-term maintenance of the systems. This reduces work for the Cooperative, allowing it to concentrate on its core business.
Several ewz solutions work together to form an integrated energy solution.
In future, residents will be able to cover a significant share of their electricity requirements with solar power from their own roofs. This reduces energy costs in the long term, and allows them to use renewable energy regularly. People who drive an electric car or are considering buying one can charge their car conveniently at home. The rental model makes it easier to get started, while ewz takes care of operation and maintenance.
The project marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration. Over the next five years, ewz and GEWOBAG will work together to upgrade other suitable housing developments by combining solar contracting and a charging solution. ewz will operate and maintain the respective systems for 25 years.
