‘I really annoy my friends sometimes, because I’m always pointing out which buildings I’ve laid cables to.’

‘We play in the Champions League’

Srod, Mica and Boris are grid electricians at ewz. They love the fact that they keep the city supplied with electricity and work on the most complex grid in Switzerland. Mica commutes for 3 hours every day to do his job.

‘When we disconnected the Spanish Consulate from the grid to replace the connection, that was really cool. And it was incredible to see the power cable at the Letzigrund stadium. When I’m out and about with my friends, I really annoy them sometimes, because I’m always pointing out which buildings I’ve laid cables to and which overhead cables I’ve maintained. But I can’t help it: I’m proud that we keep our city supplied with electricity.’ (Srod)

‘We work on the most complex, state-of-the-art grids in Switzerland. The equipment, protective clothing and vehicles are the best there is and the work is very varied. That’s why I like to say that we play in the Champions League at ewz. In return, I’m happy to commute every day from Pratteln (Basel-Landschaft) to Zurich Oerlikon – 1.5 hours a day, each way. As team leader, I’m happy to take on responsibility, and the bigger the team, the bigger the projects. I’m also passionate about training apprentices. Srod completed his apprenticeship in 2018.’ (Mica)

‘After secondary school, I started to study theology – no joke. But my father thought I should do something more practical and work for the city – he worked at VBZ all his life. So that’s how I came to be a grid electrician. I absolutely loved the apprenticeship, which I finished in 2018. Bit by bit, I’m able to work more independently and take on more responsibility, which I enjoy. I enjoyed tinkering with things as a child and teenager, and now it’s my job to tinker – a childhood dream come true.’ (Boris)

‘ewz is a great place for training. As the grid is so big, we get to take on lots of tasks that a grid electrician has to be able to master. The high quality of the training at ewz is well known in our industry – there’s no better employer to have on your CV. I’ve already recruited other grid electricians. I’m currently planning to do some in-service training in electrical engineering at the Higher Vocational College, which ewz is supporting.’ (Srod)

‘The “Legend”, as we like to call Hanspeter, is also part of our team. He’s 57 years old and completed the first training course in Switzerland to be a grid electrician. He’s been working at ewz for many years. Lots of grid electricians stay here a long time. It’s particularly good terms here for people with children. I’m working on my family planning!’ (Mica)
