‘I feel I have the trust of my supervisors here.’
Jörg, Head of Data Services
Jörg is an IT architect at ewz. He uses big data and artificial intelligence to make the electricity grid more stable. He enjoys the freedom, camaraderie and development opportunities: at 51, he’s been able to launch a whole new project.
‘Ok, maybe at first glance ewz isn’t the hottest address in the digital hotspot of Zurich. But if you look again, it has a great deal going for it. The energy industry has become extremely dynamic, and digitalisation – and I also include big data in that – is becoming increasingly important. We’re way ahead when it comes to using the latest technologies, and we’re also the first municipal department to make full use of the cloud.
I’ve been at ewz for 15 years. Why? Because I can realise my potential here professionally, and I have the freedom to initiate new projects. Because I can work from home on certain days, and can also take a sabbatical. Because the camaraderie is real here, and I feel I have the trust of my supervisors.
At my age, as you know, many places would send me to the scrap heap. Not ewz. This year, at the age of 51, I got the opportunity to take on a management role again and to build a whole new team. It’s made up of IT and business experts and is the first in the company to work in an agile manner – meaning it’s autonomous, self-organised and interdisciplinary.
We’re developing a new data platform in the cloud that will enable us to detect and resolve any faults in the electricity grid more quickly, for example. Exploring the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and developing them for use in the energy industry is very exciting. It’s also good to know that our work at the computer isn’t just a gimmick; it’s providing real benefits for the residents of Zurich, because a stable power supply and comprehensive fibre-optic network are crucial for our city.’
